Vision Problems and Treatments
With the increasing popularity of computers, both at work
and at home, there has developed a relatively new condition of computer
vision problems called Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS). It has been estimated
that up to 90% of computer users will develop computer vision problems
to some degree if they use a computer for more than 2 hours at a time.
You may have this condition if you have one or more
of the following symptoms:
-
Headaches that develop when using the computer or shortly
thereafter
-
Stiff or sore neck, shoulder or back after using the
computer for a while
-
Double vision when looking at the computer from eye
muscle fatigue
-
Dry eyes shortly after using the computer from insufficient
or inadequate blinking
-
Eyestrain or tired eyes when using the computer which
can be further described as:
burning or itching of the eyes from eye fatigue that is relieved if
you stoplooking at the computer
blurred vision at distance or near, the former from eye muscle spasm and
the latter from eye fatigue
red or blood shot eyes after using the computer
irritated, aching or sore eyes after computer use
squinting to overcome blurring or light sensitivity while on the computer
watering or tearing of eyes when using the computer for awhile
Treatments for computer vision problems:
-
Special eye exercises to strengthen and relax
eye muscle.
-
Special computer eyeglasses to focus print
and allow eye muscles to relax.
20/20/20 rule:
every 20 minutes look away from the computer
look at a distant object at least 20 feet away
-
look at the distant object for at least 20 seconds before
going back to the computer
